The 2008 Season in Reflections

All the great philosopher has said, “All Great Thing Must Come to an End…”.  However, before we say goodbye to the 2008 Inaugural Aztex Season, I asked a number of supporters to submit their thoughts for what we’ve seen so far, their opinions on where we are, and what the future holds for us.  Below are their musings.

If you would like to submit your impressions for posting, simply email them to reflections08@chanticosarmy.com, and I’ll post them here.  No editing (so use spellcheck), no modification, just the raw truth.  Make sure to either sign your name, your moniker, or anonymous.

Many thanks.

Text Box: It's been a great season. Many thanks to Phil, Kay, and all of the players and volunteers! It's been a long time coming but it looks like Austin FINALLY has a REAL pro soccer team on the way, a great youth team, excellent coaches, and a GREAT supporters group. Let's make sure that we stay in touch and pick up next season with the same level of support. Hopefully we will have some friendlies to watch in the offseason. I can't wait for us to kick some Silverback butt next year!

A Team
An Army
And a Nation was born

In a land not always kind to football, we formed, we fought, and we bled for our game, for our team, and for our future that it might be steeped in glories and honors untold.

Text Box: Hearing the news that Austing was now home to a U23 PDL team was met with “Oh, that will be fun!”. Never did I imagine that a first season team would do so well. Seeing our boys play with such drive and obvious love for the game was simply inspiring. Not only did the team make an impression, everyone from volunteers, to staff, and owners were so approachable and eager to share their love for football and for the Aztex. Congratulations and see you next season. GOA YOU AZTEX!

Text Box: I am coming into this game with a very basic knowledge of the sport.  I've never followed the European leagues, and I only know the really famous players.  So basically I'm a typical American sports fan. I may be a newbie right now but dammit, you gotta start somewhere right?

That being said, I am very excited about our Aztex and Chanticos Army.  I'm a big fan of the watch parties and I hope they get bigger and bigger over time.  I hope we can all get together for home games next year and give our guys some real home field advantage (I am a great yeller).

As the sport grows in Austin and the USA in general, a lot of people coming to the game will be like me (I think), guys who can talk all day about longhorn football, but have only a elementary idea about soccer.  So some basics about football would be great for me, even if it might be annoying to guys like you who have been closely following the sport for years.

Text Box: I joined the Founder's Club in early May. I only thought it would be a good way of getting season tickets to see the new reincarnation of the Austin PDL team. The buzz on the Aztex was a little better than any of the other soccer teams in Austin, so I thought I would give it a chance. My expectations were completely shot out of the water. Everything was better than I expected. Everything about the Founder's Club was worth the expense.

The first home game was great. My daughter and I really enjoyed ourselves. The quality of play was very good for an amateur team. The team not only won all home games except one, they clinched the Mid-South Division with 3 games left in the season. Very impressive. I couldn't wait until the playoffs. I think we did great in the playoffs, even with a loss to Laredo. In my opinion, Laredo knew they couldn't beat us strictly with soccer skills, so they played the mental game. A pretty effective strategy as it turned out. If the Kraze had faced us, I think we could have beat them. Only a team we had played previous could have exploited a weakness like that. I would bet that Laredo will go all the way, and if they do, I'll congratulate them when we beat them in Austin next year!

With a start like that for an organization, the sky is the limit. I look forward to what the future holds.
