SCOUTING REPORT :: NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION February 22, 2009 The Austin Aztex USL1 side will open their inaugural season by playing a series of 3 exhibition matches with some of the most challenging teams in all of American soccer; the New England Revolution, the Houston Dynamo and the Columbus Crew. On February 28th, we start with the New England Revolution, who will have been in Austin a week with their training camp. This will be a very challenging team, who has had a lot of success over the years in Major League Soccer. Match Report :: Austin Aztex USL1 v. New England Revolution March 1, 2009 Well, it wasn’t exactly the start of the Aztex USL1 side that we’d wanted. For starters, the result was not quite right (the 2 and the 0 were on the wrong sides of the scoreboard) and the weather was not right. In fact, I’m just now regaining the feeling in parts of my body. I felt that the Aztex started off poor. First it was Zack Pope getting a yellow in the fourth minute, followed by the Rev’s goal in the 12th minute. The guys all seemed very nervous, and the movement not synchronized. Even when I reminded myself that was to be expected (after all, they’d only been together for 4 days), it was still difficult at times to watch. The Revs realized soon that they had a strong advantage on Zack’s side of the field, and continued to send balls his way, either hoping that they could get a break past Zack or that Zack would garner his second yellow for the match. However, in the 7th minute, Kevin Alston placed a nice cross that set up Rev’s striker Michael Vidiera to set the score 1-0. However, after about 15 minutes, the Aztex really seemed to settle down, and start playing thoughtfully. There were a number of well placed crosses to Gifton who was playing up front in the middle. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to either pass the ball to streaking wingers (mainly because they weren’t streaking fast enough) nor was he able to turn his defender and get free in front of the goal. I’m not sure if this was conditioning or if the cold weather (about 50° F at the time with winds gusting to I believe 25mph) was aggravating his arthritis. At half time, Adrian Heath changed out the entire 11 (legal as this is an exhibition match). Unfortunately, we saw the same nervousness in the new 11. This resulted in the same disjointed play, with the focal point being an own goal by Beto in the 57th minute. However, just like in the first half, the second half saw the boys calm down around the 60 minute marker. At that point, we saw some real positives, the greatest of which, in my opinion, was the absolutely phenomenal play of Sullivan Silva. My god that boy can move the ball on the attack. So the Rev’s are in the books. A lot of ugly, but frankly, I’m not that worried about it. With the short time the guys had together and the potential that I saw, I think there’s some real improvement that will be made and quickly. After all, it’s now only 6 days before the Dynamo come up from Houston (with A LOT of supporters). You can read additional reports at the links below.
