Match Report :: USL1 League Match :: Aztex 0, Montreal Impact 4 PDF Print E-mail

The Austin Aztex made their first road trip of the regular USL1 season this week to the Great White North.  The Aztex visited the Montreal Impact, who have had a mixed recent history as of late.  Although they went to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League this season, recent history has seen their coach sacked (just this past week), and their position in the standings being in the cellar, still waiting for a win.

Unfortunately, this changed after the Impact ran rough shod over a beleagured Aztex defense in the second half of the match.  The first half started out very strong for the Aztex, who made the trip without the aid of Gifton Noel-Williams (hamstring), Kieron Bernard (hamstring), Sam Reynolds (back), Yordany Alvarez (non-injury related), Lyle Adams (Graduation) and Sullivan Silva (non-injury related).  The Aztex had a very strong showing with their starters, who managed to move the ball very well and showed great poise in the first half.  Something they've been without so far this season.  The starters, as best as I could put together were:

Position Player
 GoalkeeperMiguel Gallardo
 DefenderGareth Evans
 DefenderJosh Alcala
 DefenderRyan Caugherty
 DefenderZach Pope
 DefenderDavid Sias
 MidfieldMichael Callahan
 MidfieldJarius Holmes
 ForwardKyle Brown
 ForwardEddie Johnson
 MidfieldRyan McMahen

In the first half, Eddie Johnson had a number of touches that really provided quality play up front.  When teamed up with Ryan Caugherty, the two were able to get the ball moving up the field often and quickly.  Jarius Holmes had very good movement on the left side of the pitch, and so the attacks from the Aztex really seemed to be creating stress in the Impact backline.  The passing showed the control and management that many of us have been wishing for since the NE Revs match.  In fact, I remember talking to several at Cuatro's about the fact that we finally seemed to have kicked the first half challenges that we'd been suffering under recently.

At the half, the score was 0-0, with both teams seeming to settle into a good grove of play.  Each squad had some attempts on goal, and we all knew that it would soon break open when the first goal was scored.  Unfortunately, when the squads returned after the half, it was the Impact who drew first blood.

And draw blood they did.  In the space of only 11', the Impact had taken it from a scoreless draw to a defining 3-0 lead.  Unfortunately, we had real problems in the feed off of USLLive.com at Cuatro's, so we didn't see much of the action.  Thanks to a group of Impact fans who were keeping us in the loop via the USLLive.com chat sessions.  However, after the second goal, many of us felt that not being able to watch the match was probably a real good thing.  The problems seemed to be tied to the Aztex defense not being able to control the back line.  The Impact quickly found that this was the weakest link on this day, and they constantly attacked.  This resulted in the rapid succession of goals, but it also kept the ball out of the hands of Caugherty, Brown and Johnson, who were able to get chances when they had the ball.

By the time the final whistle blew, we were all glad to be done with it, and were already looking at the May 24th match at home against the Carolina Railhawks.  Carolina currently sits in first place in the USL1, with 13 points off of 7 matches.

Here are the stats that I was able to get from the Impact website (many thanks to them)...
